After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi in 1962, he earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1965. After completing his internship in 1966, Dr. Sheffield joined the United States Air Force and was based in Japan for two years. When he returned to the United States in 1969, he began a one-year general surgery internship at Emory and Grady Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a three-year residency in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.
