If you’re new to hearing aids, you probably have a lot of questions about them. Below we review some of the most frequently asked questions new hearing aid users ask us.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?

Hearing aids are electronic devices that help you hear by amplifying sounds in your environment to a level your ears can detect. They consist of a microphone that picks up sounds in your environment, a processor that amplifies sounds to the exact level your hearing loss requires and a receiver that delivers the amplified sound to your ears.

Will There Be an Adjustment Period?

Putting in a pair of hearing aids is not the same as putting on a pair of glasses. This is because when your hearing loss goes untreated for a while, your brain experiences what is called auditory deprivation. This means your brain essentially “forgets” how to process certain sounds, like the hum of the refrigerator or whispers behind you at University 16 Cinemas.

These sounds will be bothersome at first, which is why you’ll start with wearing your hearing aids for just a few hours a day, then slowly build up to wearing them during all waking hours, except when showering or swimming.

Will Hearing Aids Restore My Hearing?

In most cases, hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ears that convert soundwaves to electrical impulses the brain can understand. Hearing aids do not restore these hair cells, they just amplify sounds to a volume level the cells can detect. Don’t expect your hearing to be the same it once was; however, you can expect better communication abilities.

How Much Maintenance Do Hearing Aids Need?

Because hearing aids are subjected to earwax, sweat and oils from your skin and hair on a daily basis, they need to be cleaned daily. Be sure to wipe down your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth and use a wax pick/wire loop to remove stubborn debris. We recommend storing your hearing aids in a dehumidifier at night to help evaporate moisture and extend their lifespan.

You should also bring your hearing aids in every six months for a clean and check appointment to ensure your devices are in good working order.
